At the other extreme, members of the genera Ouroborus, Karusasaurus, Cordylus and Namazonurus are heavily armored, covered with spines and imbricated osteoderms. At one extreme, most of the body of species belonging to the genera Platysaurus and Pseudocordylus is completely devoid of spines and osteoderms.
Perhaps the most notable feature of girdled lizards is their extensive variation in the amount of body armor, including the extent and length of spines, as well as the expression and thickness of osteoderms ( Broeckhoven et al., 2016, 2018 Fig. 4). Girdled lizards are predominantly rock-dwellers and are present in various habitats ranging from semi-deserts to subtropical forests and from lowlands to montane regions at high altitude. While the former is morphologically conserved, the latter underwent rapid diversification, resulting in a high degree of morphological disparity ( Broeckhoven et al., 2016). Girdled lizards (Cordylidae) are a small family of predominantly rock-dwelling sit-and-wait foraging lizards endemic to sub-Saharan Africa and comprises two subfamilies: Platysaurinae and Cordylinae. A few axons regenerate into the regenerated tail from neurons above the level of amputation ( Alibardi and Miolo, 1990). A pale, round cell differentiates that is probably a precursor to neural and glial cells ( Alibardi et al., 1992). Most of the cells in the regenerated cord are ependymal cells and only a few are neurons and glia. The cord regenerates in the same way as described for the salamander, except that it is not as highly differentiated. The myotomic patterns of the tail muscles are regenerated, but a thin un-segmented cartilage tube induced by the cord replaces the vertebrae ( Simpson, 1965 Alibardi and Sala, 1988). The regeneration blastema of the lizard tail does not faithfully restore the original tail architecture. Lizards regenerate their tails and are the highest class of vertebrate to display any degree of spinal cord regeneration during tail regeneration. Crested geckos, native to New Caledonia, are an excellent example of a species that can be easily bred in captivity when maintained properly. Examples of scientific research conducted on lizards includes temperature-dependent sex determination ( Viets et al., 1993) and embryonic development ( Wise et al., 2009) in Eublepharis macularius, toe pad adhesion in Gekko gecko ( Autumn et al., 2000), eggshell characteristics in Correlophus ciliatus ( Andrews, 2017), and reproductive morphology and behavior in Anolis carolinensis ( Lovern et al., 2004).īreeding lizards in captivity can be accomplished rather easily when species-specific needs are met. Lizards have also become popular in research due to their unique qualities, behaviors, and relative ease of captive breeding.
Diverse in their colors, patterns, and sizes, lizards like leopard geckos ( Eublepharis macularius), crested geckos ( Correlophus ciliatus), and bearded dragons ( Pogona vitticeps) in particular, have become popular in the pet trade.
